Macy’s is one of America’s premier retailers. With fiscal 2017 sales of $24.837 billion and approximately 130,000 employees, the company operates more than 690 department stores under the nameplates Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, and approximately 160 specialty stores that include Bloomingdale’s The Outlet, Bluemercury and Macy’s Backstage. But times are tough for retailers. It’s in the midst of closing about 100 stores, scaling back its retail footprint as it invests in a new customer experience to make shopping easier and more engaging.
Mobile shopping is a big part of that investment. At the Shoptalk Conference in Las Vegas this week, the department store operator announced a new mobile checkout platform to help customers skip the checkout and pay by scanning bar codes on items with their smartphone using the refreshed Macy’s mobile app.
The feature will be introduced at its Bloomingdale’s store in New York’s Soho neighborhood and then all Macy’s stores by the end of this year. It’s also offering an augmented reality feature in the app so customers can ‘see’ how furniture will look in a home setting.
