Sears may follow Toys ‘R Us and other notable retailers down the road to bankruptcy and even liquidation, news reports suggest.

But if Sears bites the dust, it would represent the biggest thud in the fast-changing retail business because the company was once America’s largest retailer. With the Sears name on the tallest building of its time, the company became an icon of how the nation’s consumer economy grew into the greatest on earth.

Sears now is about to become “Where America Shopped”—it used to be “Where America Shops.”

Even after combining the venerable retail brand several years ago with Kmart, once the nation’s other largest retailer, Sears CEO and majority shareholder Edward Lampert couldn’t stop the collapse.
